Fabian Kohler will give an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at SRF’s investigation “Szene isch Business”. This investigation into a prominent Swiss social media network illustrates how OSINT methods can be systematically used to uncover hidden business structures. Starting from viral content involving privacy violations on social media, the investigation followed a trail through commercial registry data and ultimately exposed an international network dealing in luxury counterfeits worth millions. The presentation highlights the concrete methods and tools used during the investigation: combining aggregators and breached data to connect disparate sources, performing forensic analysis of website source code to uncover hidden payment flows, and applying SOCMINT techniques to identify actors behind pseudonymous accounts. The talk also explores strategies that have proven successful in other investigations but failed in this case, offering valuable lessons learned.
